How to Estimate Livestock Weight with a Tape Measure

Heart girth and body length formula for estimating live weight when a scale is not available.

Definition: Tape-measure weight estimation uses body measurements (heart girth and length) to approximate live weight when a scale is unavailable. It is a management tool, not show-day gospel.

Common formula (inches → pounds): weight ≈ (heart girth² × body length) ÷ 400. Measure girth behind the front legs; measure length carefully and consistently.

Worked example: Girth 45 in, length 54 in → (2025 × 54) ÷ 400 = 273.4 lb. For lighter hogs, some field guides add a small correction (ShowPen’s pig under-150 path adds ~7 lb after the base formula).

  • Use the same landmarks every time to reduce noise in your log.
  • Verify on a real scale before major ration changes or fair week.
  • Log tape estimates with a note so judges know the source.
