Definition: Feeder (purchase) weight is the live weight you buy at project start. The right window is reverse-engineered from show date, target class weight, and a realistic ADG for your management level.
Formula: purchase weight ≈ target weight − (expected ADG × days to show).
Worked example: Target 265 lb, 110 days, expected ADG 1.7 → 265 − 187 = ~78 lb. New exhibitors often plan ADG 1.5 for margin: 265 − 165 = ~100 lb feeder.
Selection checklist beyond the number
- Structure, feet/legs, and health first — weight is necessary but not sufficient.
- Confirm county min/max and sale eligibility before the barn sale.
- Log purchase weight, tag, and cost the same day for an accurate record book.
Use the purchase weight calculator before you buy. Pair with the show pig target weight guide and ADG basics.
Next step: Create a free project and record purchase weight + cost on day one.
